City Roots
An app that connects urban gardeners with yard sharers!
EMPATHIZE
Americans are spending more than 11% of their disposable income on food, per federal data - the highest level in more than three decades.
This case study explores how urban gardening transforms neglected neighborhood spaces into vibrant community assets. By pairing passionate growers with landowners who have unused yards or vacant lots, this model provide affordable fresh produce, builds green spaces and strengthens local communities
PROBLEM STATEMENT:
How might we create more opportunities for people to grow their own food and reduce their grocery expenses?
Key Learnings
After conducting interviews with participants who had no available space for gardening, I was able to identify 4 key areas.
Budget-
most like to buy organic, but found it too expensive
Safety-
most had concerns over having a clear agreement between the gardener and lot owner
Getting started-
Most didn’t know how to go about community gardening
Knowledge-
Some had lack of basic knowledge on how to garden
